Teacher guide reSolve: Counting: Handfuls

This lesson focuses on building students' counting skills, particularly their ability to subitise a collection (recognise the number of items in a group without the need to count them) . Students consider ways of structuring a collection so that the total can be quickly identified. They explore different arrangements for numbers and are given opportunities to explore skip counting, addition and partitioning. The lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry program.

  • This resource is valuable for supporting the Number and place value substrand of foundation year mathematics. As students explore different ways of counting their 'handfuls' of objects, the lesson is of particular value to the content descriptions about understanding of the language and processes of counting, connecting number names, numerals and quantities and subitising small collections of objects.
  • The resource is also valuable for supporting the Numeracy general capability. The lesson provides multiple opportunities for students to connect and order number names, numerals and groups of objects using numbers up to two digits.
